Background on UAA Day of Service

On the day our President of the United States was sworn in, Chancellor Ulmer issued a challenge in a letter to the UAA campus community:

"The President's call to action, to become involved, is one that I join in making on this important day. President Obama said, 'What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility -- a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly...This is the price and the promise of citizenship.' We must take up the challenge; to help make our community, city, state, nation and the world a better place. Please consider what you can do to serve -- not just for a day or a month but for the whole year! I hope the UAA community will join me in making 2009 a year of service."

In response to the Chancellor's challenge, the UAA Assembly has organized an annual UAA Day of Service. This year it will take place on Thursday, Feb. 10. There are several ways to contribute on this day, including serving at the Feb. 10 Bean-a-Fit lunch on campus, contributing a box of personal necessities, or bringing new gloves and socks to the basketball games that evening. Details on these Day of Service opportunities are listed below and on the UAA Governance website:

Bean-a-Fit
Thursday, Feb. 10, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Student Union, South Cafeteria

UAA will host a lunch to benefit Bean's Cafe. Come by the South Cafeteria in UAA's Student Union on Feb. 10 to have a hearty soup and cornbread meal and the proceeds will go to Bean's Cafe. $12 will buy you a bottomless bowl of soup and the money will go to support this important nonprofit whose mission is to feed and shelter Anchorage's homeless.

Have a Heart: UAA collection boxes
Thursday, Feb. 10, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Student Union, South Cafeteria

While you're in the Student Union for lunch, drop off a handmade "heart" box of goodies for teens and adults in need. Adult boxes will be donated to the community through Bean's Cafe; teen boxes will be donated to the community through Covenant House. Old shoe boxes are the perfect size for things like toothbrushes, socks, hairbrushes and other small personal necessities. Suggested items can be found on the UAA Governance website.  Decorate the box (so it can be opened without unwrapping) with a Valentine's, UAA, or other theme to represent your group. Prizes will be awarded for the best decoration by an individual, small group or large group.

Sock and glove drive at the game on Feb. 10
Thursday, Feb. 10, 5:15-9:30 p.m.
Wells Fargo Sports Complex

In addition to cheering on the Seawolves, you can give back to the community by bringing a new pair of gloves, socks or mittens to the UAA double-header at the Wells Fargo Sport Complex on Thursday, Feb. 10. Women's basketball begins at 5:15 p.m. and Men's basketball begins at 7:30 p.m.
