Workshop: 'Using Native Case Studies for Teaching and Learning Across the Disciplines' set for Jan. 21, 2011

by Kathleen McCoy  |

Friday, Jan. 21, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307

For the past five years, the Enduring Legacies Project at The Evergreen State College has been developing Native Case Studies around contemporary issues in Indian Country. This interactive, interdisciplinary teaching and learning approach has been enormously successful with students and faculty. The unique Native perspective presented in well-researched, reality-based cases offers opportunities for cross-cultural learning and a greater understanding and awareness of Native issues.

Case teaching is an engaging method that can be adapted to students at any education level. Through role play, debate, group discussion and collaboration students develop critical thinking and analysis abilities as well as problem solving and decision making skills.

This workshop introduces participants to the case study approach and the resources in the Enduring Legacies Native Cases Initiative. Attendees will participate in a case discussion which will model a variety of learning strategies, and be introduced to ways to use these cases in their classrooms or for professional development.
