2011 Atwood Chair of Journalism Scott Jensen discusses 'The Threat No One Predicted' on Feb. 22

The UAA Department of Journalism and Public Communications welcomes the 2011 Atwood Chair of Journalism Scott Jensen for a public lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

Jensen will discuss "The Threat No One Predicted," a talk about this brand-new beast, the hungry consumivore -- is successfully satisfying its hunger for online content at the expense of information professionals. As technology and multimedia platforms rapidly evolve, news consumers are discovering each other. These amateurs make their own way -- simultaneously creating, devouring and regurgitating compelling digital content. And why shouldn't they? Is anyone else doing it better? They don't think so.

Jensen believes it's not too late for individual journalists, "Even though we don't control the flow of information anymore, we still know how to present it well. That's the key."

Jensen says now is the time for journalists to adhere to foundational storytelling theory. The concept he teaches in class is called commitment. Simplicity. Efficiency. Velocity. Journalists can survive in spite of the chaos ravaging their traditional mediums.

Jensen is a two-time winner of the National Press Photographers Association's National Ernie Crisp Television News Photographer of the Year. He has 15 years of experience in large television markets such as Minneapolis/St. Paul and Seattle, but also has worked as director of photography at KTUU Channel 2 in Anchorage. He is also the recipient of numerous Emmys and earned a Sigma Delta Chi Award for feature reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists in 2008.

The Atwood Chair of Journalism is among the nation's most prestigious journalism chairs. It was established in the Department of Journalism and Public Communications at UAA by the Atwood Foundation to help educate Alaska's next generation of journalists. Anchorage Times publisher Robert B. Atwood established the Atwood Chair at UAA in 1979.
