April 2011: Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium

The UAA University Honors College is pleased to welcome John Delaney and Lt. Col. Dave Grossman as its 2011 Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium keynote speakers.

Keynote Address with John Delaney, Ph.D.
"Next Generation Ocean Science"
Thursday, April 14

John Delaney holds the Jerome M. Paros Endowed Chair in Sensor Networks at the University of Washington in the School of Oceanography and is a member of the astrobiology program. Delaney's team will design, install and operate, for 25 years, an innovative, Internet-connected, full-ocean research infrastructure based on a network of industry-standard submarine ber-optic cables. This system will detect and respond to energetic, transient events like giant storms, large earthquakes and erupting volcanoes in major portions of the ocean basin.

Lt. Col. Dave Grossman is an internationally recognized scholar, author, soldier and speaker who is one of the world's foremost experts in the field of human aggression and the roots of violence and violent crime. He is the author of "On Killing," which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize; has been translated into Japanese, Korean and German; is on the U.S. Marine Corps Commandant's required reading list; and is required reading at the FBI academy and numerous other academies and colleges.

The Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium is funded by the University Honors College, Alaska Heart Institute, Estelle J. Spatz Undergraduate Research Fund, BP, Conoco Phillips, Institute of Social and Economic Research, UAA/APU Consortium Library, UAA Office of Community Partnerships, Dr. Alex Hills, Brian and Amy Meissner and many other generous individuals.
