Rasmuson Hall, Room 303

UAA CBPP presents Dr. Charles M. Schweik, an associate professor from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, in this discussion of open source software. Free/Libre and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects are a form of common property regime where individuals work collectively over the Internet to produce software that is a public, rather than a private, good. Models of open source-like collaboration are now being extended beyond software to collaboration and production of other online digital content (e.g., Wikipedia, Open Education Initiative, Science Commons, etc.).

The talk will consist of an overview of a book tentatively entitled "Understanding Collaboration in the Internet Era: A Study of Open Source Software Commons" (forthcoming, MIT Press), which we believe is the first book-length empirical study of this important Internet-based collaborative phenomenon.
