Alaska Native corporation Calista Corp. sells last two weekly newspapers to UAA professor

by Kathleen McCoy  |

News reports of Calista liquidating their chain of six weekly newspapers state that the Alaska Native corporation recently sold the last two, The Tundra Drums and the Seward Phoenix Log, to Edgar Blatchford, an associate professor of journalism and communications at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Blatchford founded Alaska Newspapers Inc. in the 1980s, the subsidiary through which Calista operated its weeklies.

"I appreciate Calista's commitment to rural journalism and I'm excited about the possibilities of the Seward Phoenix Log and The Tundra Drums," Blatchford said. "I see tremendous potential in working with local people. The future is very bright for these areas. We will be open, honest and objective."
