Sept. 25, 2011 - Mark Wolbers: Clarinet Recital

Mark Wolbers recital, Sept. 25Sunday, Sept. 25, 4 p.m. Fine Arts Building (ARTS), Recital Hall

Clarinetist Mark Wolbers marks the beginning of his 20th year as UAA's professor of clarinet with a solo recital.

And when we say solo, we mean solo. This unusual concert will feature solo repertoire for the clarinet by Richard Rodney Bennett, Malcolm Arnold, Gordon Jacob, Bela Kovacs, Artie Shaw and Heinrich Sutermeister. The recital will be presented in a slightly informal format similar to the annual Homer noon concerts that Wolbers performs each August as part of the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra music festival.

Wolbers earned his doctoral degree in clarinet performance from the University of Michigan. His performance career has included solo performances, orchestral appointments and chamber music. A recent CD recording, "L'Histoire du Soldat," on the MSR label with Alaska Pro Musica was hailed as a "masterful performance" by The Clarinet. His commanding concerto performance two years ago of Scott McAllister's "Black Dog" with the University Wind Ensemble continues to thrill audiences on YouTube.

Parking for the UAA Fine Arts Building is convenient and free. Tickets are $18 and $15 for seniors, students and military, and are available from CenterTix.net or the box office in the UAA Fine Arts Building, (907) 786-4849.
