2011 National Suicide Prevention Week

Alaska reports the highest rate of suicide per capita in the country, with rates nearly double the national average.

Across the United States, suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24. In Alaska, rates of suicide among this age group are three times greater than the national average.

What can you do?
Recognize the warning signs for suicide risk. These signs include:

• withdrawal from friends, family and society
• dramatic mood changes
• acting reckless or engaging in risky activities
• increasing alcohol or drug use
• talking about wanting to hurt or kill oneself
  

If you are concerned about an individual, refer him/her to the resources available on campus. Keep the information for these resources handy during class meetings and in your office, so you can provide it to students as needed. You can also contact these resources directly for more information about campus suicide prevention and approaching students if you are concerned.
