Results of the victimization survey conducted in the Municipality of Anchorage from
April 2011 to June 2011 will be presented in a press conference following the opening
ceremony of Domestic Violence Awareness Month at the Anchorage Museum. This survey
by the UAA Justice Center through a contract with the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (CDVSA) was designed to measure the lifetime and past-year exposure to sexual violence and
intimate partner violence. A brief overview of the survey will be followed by a presentation
of the data and a discussion of the results.
Every human being has the right to be safe and free from violence in their own homes,
in their relationships and in their community. Intimate partner violence and sexual
violence are endemic problems. Up until now, regional baseline data were not available
to guide planning and policy development or to effectively evaluate the impact of
prevention and intervention services. This victimization study provides the first
definitive measures of intimate partner violence and sexual violence, which can be
used to provide greater empirical support for responses to, and prevention of, violence
against women.
Held jointly by the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, AWAIC, STAR and the UAA Justice Center, this Domestic Violence Awareness Month Coalition event
will include video remarks by Senator Lisa Murkowski and Senator Mark Begich, a State
Proclamation by Attorney General John Burns and the presentation of Domestic Violence
Awareness Month awards.
