Recital of solo and chamber music for the trombone is Oct. 9

Christopher Sweeney, associate professor of music at UAA, presents a recital of solo and chamber music for the trombone on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. Joining Sweeney will be several Trombone concert is Sunday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. in ARTS 150UAA faculty and students: Dean Epperson, piano; Linn Weeda, trumpet; Cheryl Pierce, French horn; Brady Byers and Eric Bleicher, percussion.

All recital literature was written in the 20th century by American composers including Eric Ewazen and Emmett Yoshioka. Extase for Trombone, unaccompanied, by Yoshioka, highlights the beautiful tone of the instrument, as well as demonstrates how the trombone is equally at home playing softly or with strength and power.

Alaska premieres include Norman Bolter's Dances of Greeting and Anthony Plog's Four Sierra Scenes for Brass Quintet and Soprano. Philip Munger's Aleutian Sketches was commissioned by the Chugach Brass, resident brass trio at the University of Alaska Anchorage. This work is dedicated to Linn Weeda, in recognition of the 26 years over which Munger and he created and shared music together. The world premiere was held in Unalaska, Alaska on May 13, 2011.
