by Jamie Gonzales  |

Thursday, Oct. 20, 12-1 p.m.
Rasmuson Hall, Room 108

Aaviâja Egede Lynge, a visiting scholar from Inerisaavik, the teacher preparation institute at the University of Greenland, will be speaking on education reform in that country. She is an Inuk from Greenland who has worked with school reform there for five years and also teaches educational anthropology. Greenland is a former colony of Denmark, and used the Danish school system for 250 years. But in 2002, Greenland passed the first law requiring the education system to take into account the culture and identity of Greenlandic children. Lynge will talk about efforts to put the 2002 law into practice, focusing on results and experiences of public school teachers. Her visit to Alaska is supported by the Arctic Research Consortium of the United States.
