Leading Canadian historian and scholar Dr. Whitney Lackenbauer visits UAA March 27

Dr. Whitney Lackenbauer--a leading Northern historian and scholar on contemporary Arctic sovereignty and security issues--will visit UAA to present "Canada, the United States, and the Arctic: A History of Cooperation and Prospects for the Future." The presentation will be held as part of the ISER Lunchtime Series at the UAA Diplomacy Building and is made possible by the Canadian Consulate in partnership with the University of Alaska Anchorage..

Additionally, Dr. Lackenbauer will participate in an afternoon roundtable discussion led by Willie Hensley, UAA's Visiting Distinguished Professor of Business and Public Policy, in the UAA Commons.

Dr. Lackenbauer will explore why many Canadians have deep-seated concerns about American intentions in North America's Arctic, and why he thinks the bilateral relationship has been--and is--more cooperative than divided. By revisiting this history, Dr. Lackenbauer suggests areas for improvement andapproaches to Canada-U.S. collaboration in the 21st century.

This special guest is associate professor and chair of the Department of History at St. Jermaine's University in the University of Waterloo, Ontario. He has traveled extensively with the Canadian Rangers over the last decade, and is a frequent commentator on Arctic sovereignty and security issues. His co-authored book "Arctic Front: Defending Canada in the Far North" won the 2009 Donner Prize for the best Canadian book on public policy.

Dr. Lackenbauer was a Fulbright Fellow at Johns Hopkins University in 2010 and a Canadian International Council Research Fellow in 2008-09. His current research focuses on histories of the Canadian Rangers, the Distant Early Warning Line, Arctic sovereignty and security since WWII and community-based histories of Cambridge Bay in partnership with the Kitikmeot Heritage Society.
