Languages students receive prestigious awards and scholarships

Two UAA students have been selected as recipients of 2012 U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarships for participation in the Turkish intensive summer language institute. Angel Remaley, a double major in German and anthropology, has been placed into an institute in Bursa. Ben Woodland, a German and international studies double major, will study in Ankara.

Meanwhile, fellow German major Hannah Bertrand is the recipient of the 2012 German Learning Opportunities Website (GLOW) Award, the highest distinction that the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) bestows upon an outstanding student for his/her contributions to promoting the German language and culture both at the university and in the community. Hannah has been tirelessly advocating the importance of languages and cross-cultural understanding. She is the president of the UAA German Culture Club, a teacher for the Saturday School at Rilke Schule (the German Immersion School) and a student judge at the Anchorage School District's World Languages Declamation Contest.

All three are students and advisees of Prof. Natasa Masanovic. She says of their great success, "I am so proud that our students are exploring new languages on top of their majors. What a great way of becoming a citizen of the world!"
