New books and writings by poets John Morgan, Eva Saulitis and playwright Arlitia Jones, Sept. 17

by Michelle Saport  |

Monday, Sept. 17, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

Join Alaska poets and playwrights as they present and discuss their newest books and writings.

John Morgan (English professor at UAF) will discuss his new book, "Form of Feeling: Poetry in our Lives." True to its subtitle, Morgan's book investigates the role of poetry in the contemporary world. A review from the Kitsap Sun said of the book, "Morgan's thoughts on the inspirations for poetry, the work involved in the craft and ultimately the uses of poetry are accessible and lightly instructive in this quiet but generous book."

Eva Saulitis (faculty in the Creative Writing and Literary Arts Department at UAA) will present her new collection of poetry, "Many Ways to Say It." Alaska State Writer Laureate Peggy Shumaker said of the book, "Eva Saulitis is part of nature--seawater and glacial ice, alder marsh and birch forest. She's part scientist, part oboist, part lover, part Latvian, part Alaskan. Her smart and passionate poems bring us wildly alive. These new poems enact an eternal thirst for mindful, spiritual, fully-embodied ways of thinking and feeling. Open and curious, Eva Saulitis embraces with an 'injured and blistered amen' the longings, the terrors and the glories of our brief time on this ever-changing earth."

Poet/playwright Arlitia Jones will present her new full-length play "Come to Me, Leopards," about a woman's running team. Jones received an M.F.A. in creative writing from UAA in 1995 and has been featured in numerous festivals and conferences. You can read more about her in this "I Am UAA" profile.

Note: This event is free and open to the public, with free parking in the South Lot (the lot just across from the bookstore). Visit the bookstore website or contact Rachel Epstein at repstein2@uaa.alaska.edu or (907) 786-4782 for more information.
