Fall 2012: UAA Anchorage campus ongoing construction projects

by Michelle Saport  |

Welcome back, Seawolves! As you travel to campus during the first couple weeks of classes, please consider carpooling, using buses or alternate transportation and plan for time impacts due to construction. Parking, driving and pedestrian traffic patterns have been disrupted.

Facilities had an extremely busy summer with construction and renewal activities on campus. A few projects are still in progress and will require some patience and understanding for the next few weeks. Ongoing projects include:

Seawolf Sports Arena construction has begun and will continue through the summer of 2014. You can expect construction traffic entering and exiting on Elmore. The pedestrian path along Wellness Drive to Housing will be reestablished in the next couple of days but will have on and off closures as utilities are installed along and under the path, and as overhead work occurs on the front of the building.

Science Building Renewal is in its final phases and scheduled to be completed in December 2012. The Spine connection is open between the Engineering Building and the Science Building, but there is construction on both sides of the walkway near the Science Building, so please stay alert when passing through this area.

UAA/APU Consortium Library to CPISB: Pedestrian Walkway. Facilities is installing a diagonal pedestrian walkway from the northeast side of the library lot to the ConocoPhillips Integrated Science Building (CPISB). This walkway will reduce the available parking in the library lot but will improve safety for students, faculty and staff as they use these facilities. This work will likely be complete in the next couple of weeks. The CPISB parking garage has plenty of room, and the pay and park machine is on the first floor level. The Fine Arts Building pakring lot also has room, and there is a pay and park by the Arts building entrance.

Eugene Short Hall Elevator. The elevator in Eugene Short Hall is out of service and a replacement is underway. This is an older building, so the replacement has to be custom built. The installation and inspection should be completed by the end of September. There is no ADA access to the second floor. Disability Support Services is working to reschedule applicable classes to accessible classrooms.

City Sidewalk on the North Side of Providence Drive from Alumni Loop to Elmore. The city has been working on improving the safety for pedestrians throughout the UMed District. This fall, the municipality will be constructing a sidewalk from Alumni Loop to Elmore on the north side of Providence Drive. Construction will likely cause one of the westbound lanes to be closed during working hours, possibly as early as next week. Work is scheduled to last through the construction season and will be finished in the next year.

Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we make these infrastructure improvements. Please call Chris Turletes, associate vice chancellor for Facilities and Campus Services at (907) 786-1110 with questions, concerns, complaints or any positive comments.
