Deaf Awareness Week movie: Tuesday, Sept. 25, 7:30 p.m.
Rasmuson Hall, Room 110

In celebration of Deaf Awareness Week, UAA Student Activities and the American Sign Language (ASL) Club will present a free showing of the movie "See What I'm Saying." The documentary celebrates the lives of four skilled deaf and/or hearing-impaired artists: a comic, drummer, actor and singer.

Bob, a drummer in the world's only deaf rock band, Beethoven's Nightmare, produces the largest show in the band's 30-year history; CJ, a hugely famous and internationally renowned comic in the deaf world, but virtually unknown to hearing audiences, fights to cross over to the mainstream; Robert, a brilliant actor who teaches at Juilliard, struggles to survive when he becomes homeless and has his health compromised by HIV; and TL, a hard-of-hearing singer, not quite deaf not quite hearing, struggles with her place in the community.

The deaf community is often ostracized from the artist community at large. It's only in recent years that deaf artists have begun to emerge and succeed in the mainstream entertainment field. In "See What I'm Saying," director Hilari Scarl helps raise deaf awareness among the hearing by showcasing the lives of these artists and the struggles they face.

UAA's ASL Club will host a discussion and social following the movie.
