Interdisciplinary Education and Practice in Healthcare, Sept. 18

Join us for a roundtable discussion on interdisciplinary education and practice in healthcare. The discussion will be lead by Dr. Patrick DeLeon.

Topics will include but are not limited to:

  • What factors (competencies, practices, perspectives, scopes of practice, etc.) distinguish our respective professions in healthcare?
  • What factors are common among our professions in healthcare?
  • What are best practices and models of interdisciplinary healthcare delivery?
  • What are best practices and models of interdisciplinary training of healthcare professionals?
  • How can our training programs promote the individuation and vitality of our respective professions while also promoting a healthy respect for other professions?

Dr. Patrick DeLeon began his public health internship with Senator Daniel Inouye on the first day of the infamous Watergate hearings in 1973. He retired last fall as the senator's chief of staff, having served more than 38 years. DeLeon is known for his extensive public policy advocacy in the healthcare field, specifically in psychology and nursing.

DeLeon was elected president of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2000. From 1995 to 2000, he served as editor of the journal Professional Psychology: Research and Practice. The APA has given him numerous awards, and in 2009 he received its highest honor: the APA Award for Lifetime Contributions to Psychology. In 2008, he was inducted as a member of the prestigious Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

DeLeon has a B.A. in liberal arts from Amherst College, an M.S. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Purdue University, an M.P.H. in health services administration from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a J.D. from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law. In addition to this impressive list of academic credentials, DeLeon holds three honorary doctorates.
