UAA named a 'Military Friendly School' for fourth year in a row

UAA among top 15 percent of schools nationwide recognized for its strong support of military students and veterans on campus

ANCHORAGE, AK -- For the fourth consecutive year, the University of Alaska Anchorage was designated a "Military Friendly School" by Victory Media, the premier media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life. UAA will again be listed in the Military Friendly Schools list, which honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.

"Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools shows UAA's commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students," said Sean Collins, director of G.I. Jobs and vice president of Victory Media. "As interest in education grows we're thrilled to provide the military community with transparent, world-class resources to assist in their search for schools."

Over the past several years, UAA has been working diligently to increase support services for our military and veteran students. UAA currently has more than 1,850 active duty and veteran students.

This month the university will celebrate the opening of a new office in the Student Union--UAA Military & Veteran Community Resources --to help support military students and veterans in their endeavors to pursue a higher education. Also, UAA was named this spring as one of only 11 schools nationwide to participate in the Department of Veterans Affairs VetSuccess on Campus program.

Two new personnel are supporting these increased efforts: John Johnson, coordinator of UAA Military & Veteran Community Services, and Terry Jackson, counselor for the UAA VetSuccess on Campus program. Also, UAA's Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Bruce Schultz was recently recognized by the Department of Defense as a patriotic employer for his dedication to fostering a culture at UAA that values the employment of military service members.

UAA's campus includes an extension center at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) that provides educational opportunities to about 1,000 military and civilian students. The university's Student Veterans of UAA club is also very active in helping to improve the college experience of student veterans at UAA.

"We are proud of the continued efforts to make UAA a welcoming and productive environment for our military students and veterans. We are grateful for their service to our country."
