Dec. 4, 2012: Undergraduate research grant applications due

The Office of Undergraduate Research & Scholarship is pleased to announce its fall 2012 awards programs. All UAA undergraduates are encouraged to apply.

Undergraduate Research Grants; apply by Oct. 4 or Dec. 4
These grants fund significant undergraduate research or creative projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Grants fund actual costs of a project up to $2,000 plus a $500 stipend. Proposals are accepted in both the fall and the spring semesters. This grant has two independent grant review cycles per semester. The fall 2012 deadlines are 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Funding decisions for proposals submitted by Thursday, Oct. 4, will be made by Monday, Nov. 5.


Fran Ulmer Transformative Research Award
These grants fund significant undergraduate research and creative projects in areas with the potential to transform the way we live, work and see the world. Broad topics of particular interest include sustainability, complexity, climate change, and social and public policy. Grants fund actual costs of a project up to $5,000 plus a $1,500 stipend. Proposals are accepted in both the fall and the spring semesters. The fall 2012 deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Alaska Heart Institute Biomedical Research Fellowships; apply by Oct. 4
These grants fund significant undergraduate biomedical research projects under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Each grant supports up to $5,000 in project costs, tuition for up to 6 credits of HNRS A497 (Individual Research) and a $1,500 student stipend upon completion of the project. Proposals are accepted in both the fall and the spring semesters. The fall 2012 deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Dr. Alex Hills Engineering Research/Service Project in the Community Award; apply by Oct. 18
This competitive grant supports service projects that actively involve and meet the needs of community partners. The ultimate aim will be to define and address a pressing community problem; do engineering work that produces a public good; or conduct engineering work that contributes to a community-identified issue. The grant funds the actual cost of a project up to $2,000 plus a $500 stipend. Research must be under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Proposals are only accepted in the fall semester. The fall 2012 deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18.

ISER Policy Research Award; apply by Oct. 18
These awards are presented to outstanding students in the social sciences and other applicable fields interested in the analysis of public policy issues. The selected student will contribute research and analysis skills to a study conducted at the Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER) and will be awarded a $1,500 stipend. Applications are accepted in both the fall and the spring semesters. Fall award recipients will conduct research during spring 2013. The fall 2012 deadline is 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18.

UAA Undergraduate Research in the Community Award; apply by Oct. 4 or Dec. 4
This grant supports UAA's partnerships in the community and encourages the practical application of scholarly inquiry. Research, conducted under the guidance of a faculty member and developed with a community agency, will address a specific need in the Alaska community. The final project will be delivered to the partnering agency for use in planning or program development. Awards will fund up to $2,000 for project expenses plus a $500 stipend. Proposals are accepted in both the fall and the spring semesters. This grant has two independent grant review cycles per semester. The fall 2012 deadlines are 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, and 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Discovery Grants
This grant program contributes support to ongoing undergraduate research and creative projects. Grants can be used for travel for the acquisition or processing of data/samples and/or to present research findings at conferences or seminars. Students may apply for Discovery Grants on a year-round basis via the online application process.
