Click for larger versionIn recognition of October as Archives Month-and the 10th anniversary of Home Movie Day-Alaska Moving Image Preservation Association (AMIPA) will be holding its first Home Movie Day event on Saturday, Oct. 20. What is Home Movie Day? Home Movie Day (HMD) is a celebration of amateur films and filmmaking, held annually at many venues worldwide. To the best of our knowledge, this will be the first Home Movie Day event to be held in Alaska.

Bring your home movies for inspection & evaluation:
Saturday, Oct. 20, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307

Like most HMD events, AMIPA's event will be free and the public is invited to bring in their home movie collections for inspection and evaluation by AMIPA staff. We'll be set up to wind through 8mm, Super 8mm and 16mm (the most popular formats for home movies in this part of the world), but all film formats are welcome! We'll let you know exactly what you've got (if you don't already know), give you an idea of its physical condition and offer tips on storage and preservation. We'll also be set up with light sources and loupes (hand held image magnifiers), so you can take a look at some of the image content and get an idea of who and what might be in your home move collection (a very common question, in our experience).

Special screening of restored films of St. Lawrence Island, 1964 earthquake:
Saturday, Oct. 20, 4 p.m.
UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307

Immediately following the inspection/evaluation portion of our HMD program, we'll host a free screening of selected 16mm Alaska home movies from AMIPA's collections-restored preservation prints, produced under National Film Preservation Foundation (NFPF) grants. One of these films, "East of Siberia," is an amateur documentary about life on St. Lawrence Island during the late 40s, 50s and early 60s-shot and narrated by fur trader Edward "Trader Ed" Shepherd. We'll also be showing a reel of home movies that were shot in Anchorage by Dr. David Dolese during the days and weeks following the March 1964 earthquake. These recent prints will be projected in public for the fist time, as originally intended-on film-using AMIPA's beloved 500W xenon lamp Elmo projector!

P.S.
The UAA/APU Consortium Library is also celebrating Archives Month with a film screening and free workshops!
