Oct. 11, 2012: Mark Wolbers presents 'Alto Clarinet' lecture and music demo

The College of Arts & Sciences hosts its Fall 2012 Relevant Research Speaker, Dr. Mark Wolbers and his presentation, "Alto Clarinet: The Endangered Species of the American Band."

The alto clarinet has been maligned by band directors and music educators to the point of extinction in American bands. U.S. composers and publishers no longer include parts for the instrument. Yet, many of the great composers of wind band music (Dahl, Grainger, Dello Joio, Copland, Persichetti, etc.) have written significant, as well as solo roles for this unique voice.

Dr. Mark Wolbers, along with UAA alumni musicians Sofia Lagos, Austin Roach and Mario Ayerdis, will discuss the nomenclature, origin and history of the alto clarinet and demonstrate basset horns and alto clarinets both in solo and in chamber music.
