HR announces Spring 2013 Training and Development Calendar

Human Resource Services is excited to announce our Spring 2013 Training and Development Calendar. In addition to a number of very popular workshops that will be offered, we are also offering two new programs: Coaching for Exceptional Performance and Developing Competencies: A Supervisor's Guide. Taken together, these programs will give supervisors significant insight into how to most effectively work with employees to develop their capabilities. Here is a brief description of both new workshops:

Coaching for Exceptional Performance
A major part of your job as a supervisor involves developing your employees. There are different methods to make this happen, from traditional supervision, mentoring, consulting and, finally, coaching. Coaching not only assists the employee in solving immediate issues, it develops the employee to the point where they are more effective in developing their own solutions on an ongoing basis. Through this workshop you will gain a thorough understanding of coaching competencies as well as the coaching process and will be able to implement coaching in your department.

Developing Competencies: A Supervisor's Guide
To effectively supervise, you need to know the capabilities of each of your employees. You also need to know what levels of capabilities are required for the position. These capabilities are best described as competencies. Once you understand the concept of competencies, you will be able to identify what competencies are required for each position within the university and will have a clear understanding of how you can work with your employees to increase each employee's level of competency. Understanding competencies is exceptionally beneficial for: recruiting (understanding what competencies are required for the position and also evaluating candidates level of competencies for that job), performance management (setting clear and understandable goals and objectives geared
toward increasing levels of competency), and self-development (what competencies should you have for your own job, how do you identify those and then pursue development on your own). This workshop is recommended for those who are currently supervising other employees.

We are also working on putting together a biweekly supervisor brown bag lunch discussion group. If you have any interest in being included in these sessions, please email Steve Hinds at sphinds@uaa.alaska.edu.

Most of these workshops can be presented within department workgroups. In addition, many of these workshops qualify for CEUs for various recertification needs. Please contact Steve Hinds at sphinds@uaa.alaska.edu if you have any questions about the workshops or are interested in setting up a presentation for your workgroup.
