Tracey Burke presents "Hunger in Urban Alaska: The Daily Lives of Pantry Users"
Monday, Jan. 28, 5-7 p.m.

Tracey Burke is associate professor in the School of Social Work and the recipient of the 2011 Selkregg Community Engagement & Service Learning Award. She has conducted exploratory research to reveal the background stories of local food-insecure families and worked in partnership with the Food Bank of Alaska. Join us to hear the results of Burke's research along with additional hunger study data that may challenge the way we think about poverty and hunger in our community. This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Community Engagement & Learning.

Dr. Lyn Freeman presents "Evidence-Based Nutrition for Chronic Disease Prevention and Recovery, Part 1"
Tuesday, Jan. 29, 5-7 p.m.
UAA Campus Bookstore

This two-part event in "Research in Action: The Behavioral Medicine Lecture Series" will focus on timesaving strategies for busy people. Dr. Freeman will show you how to create a week's worth of cancer-fighting, chronic-disease-preventing, portable meals in one 4-hour cooking session plus 10 minutes preparation each night. (Part 2 will be Feb. 26.)

Passport Series: Civil Engineer Karthik Murugesan's Alaskan Story, "Living under the Cloud of Uncertainty"
Thursday, Jan. 31, 5-7 p.m.

Everyone is invited to come learn about the experiences of Karthik Murugesan, president of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, Alaska section. Karthik graduated from Prairie View A & M University with a master's degree in civil engineering and is now working on a master's degree in petroleum engineering at UAF. He most recently worked at USKH Inc. His numerous civic and professional contributions to our community will be highlighted at this event.
