Engineering professors chair international symposium on frozen soilsUAA School of Engineering professors Hannele Zubeck and Zhaohui Yang recently chaired the Symposium on Mechanical Properties of Frozen Soils, in Jacksonville, Fla. The symposium, sponsored by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International, brought together experts from the U.S., Canada, Sweden, Norway, China, South Korea and Russia to discuss frozen soil standards, specifically in the area of dynamic strength testing.

Professors Zubeck and Yang presented five papers about the work they've conducted with civil engineering and Arctic engineering master's students Xiaoxuan Ge, Ben Still (URS Fellow), Tamra Kornfield and Finn Oestgaard. The papers covered sampling, machining, testing and classifying of frozen soils as well as the actual mechanical properties.
