by Michelle Saport  |

Friday, April 12, 7:30 p.m. Bartlett High School Auditorium (1101 N. Muldoon Rd.)

The University Wind Ensemble presents "Overture, Songs and Dances," an exciting musical program featuring music for band by outstanding American and English composers.

Aaron Copland's "Outdoor Overture," a work that contains all the hallmarks and characteristic sounds one expects from this iconic American composer, will open the concert. Rounding out the first half of the concert will be a rare performance of the complete Cajun Folk Songs, by American composer Frank Ticheli. The second half opens with two Winter Dances by Fergal Carroll and music by Adam Gorb. Concluding the concert will be the popular English Dances by Malcolm Arnold, originally written for orchestra, this energetic work was later arranged for band by Maurice Johnstone.

Conductor Mark Wolbers is in his 21st year at UAA and is credited with launching and developing the Wind Ensemble into one of the state's finest wind bands. As cultural ambassadors for UAA, the Wind Ensemble each fall engages in a tour of performances throughout Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. In the spring, the Wind Ensemble participates in the annual "Symphony of Sounds" scholarship concerts, and performs in the Matanuska Valley, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and UAA Commencement.

This event is free and open to the public.
