In Memory: Dr. Lawrence Trostle, retired UAA Justice Center faculty

Lawrence Trostle, retired professor at UAA's Justice Center, died Thursday, May 2, following an illness. Condolences may be sent to his family c/o the Justice Center, 3211 Providence Drive, LIB 213, Anchorage, AK 99508.

Trostle retired in 2009 and was on the faculty of the Justice Center for 18 years. He received his Ph.D. in criminal justice from Claremont Graduate School, where he was also co-director of the Haynes Foundation Law Enforcement Training Grant. Much of his research and teaching focused on law enforcement and he authored and co-authored numerous articles including, "Policing the Arctic: The North Slope in Alaska," "Police Tasks in Remote Arctic Communities" and "The Alaska Territorial Police." His course "Cinematic Images of Justice," in which he explored crime and justice issues with students in an engaging and interactive way, was a perennial favorite. Trostle brought real world experience in law enforcement to his teaching and research, having served with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs' Department and San Marino, Calif. Police Department. He previously served as president of the Western and Pacific Association of Criminal Justice Educators, and on many community committees and advisory boards including the Alaska Civic Learning Assessment Project, as well as on a variety of UAA committees. Trostle's longtime contributions to the Justice Center have been invaluable, and his service and commitment to the university are appreciated.
