Summer 2013: iPad mini grant for Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Inquiry projects

by Michelle Saport  |

"Teaching university-level courses is a form of serious intellectual work that can be as challenging and demanding as discovery research. When teaching is undertaken as a form of inquiry into the impact a course has on student understanding, the quality and depth of this work can be revealed through writing that reflects the relation between the process of teaching and its results." -Daniel Bernstein, University of Kansas

To support faculty in creating Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Inquiry (SoTL) projects, the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) is offering a limited number of participants a free iPad mini.

The Making Learning Visible (MLV) inquiry project development series offers faculty the opportunity to produce evidence of teaching effectiveness that goes beyond IDEA survey results. Findings can be used as evidence of scholarly teaching in promotion and tenure reviews. Five mandatory sessions this fall will take faculty through the process of creating and implementing a classroom inquiry plan with an additional optional consultation available on the final meeting date. Faculty will also place a course inquiry project documenting the inquiry on a CAFE maintained website to share with UAA colleagues and other professionals.

All UAA faculty are eligible to apply, but must be able to:

  • Attend all five MLV sessions (Sept. 6 and 20, Oct. 4 and 18 and Nov. 1, plus an optional consultation on Nov. 15);
  • Introduce, document and assess the new strategy in at least one course during the spring 2014 semester; and
  • Create an inquiry project and post it to the MLV Blackboard site by March 17, 2014.

Priority (in order) will be given to 1) faculty who participated in the MLV book group but have yet to implement a project; 2) faculty already introduced to MLV (e.g., Tech Fellows, Center for Community Engagement and Learning, Sustainability Across the Curriculum and CAHDRE faculty) who are ready to begin the inquiry project creation process; and 3) faculty with no prior MLV experience.

Apply at the CAFE website. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, May 31. Awardees will be notified by Wednesday, June 12.
