'Cognitive processing of Chinese characters/Character learning,' Oct. 4

Halen Shen, Ph.D., leads a discussion on the cognitive processes involved in learning Chinese as a second language, with an emphasis on character learning. Shen is an associate professor in the Department of Asian and Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Iowa. Her research areas include the literacy development in Chinese as a second language (with a focus on orthographic knowledge development and cognitive processing of learning Chinese characters), reading education in Chinese as a second language (with a focus on reading comprehension, acquisition and assessment) and instructional theories in teaching Chinese as a second language (with a focus on classroom learning and teaching methodology).
