Alaska Economy

Slide from Gunnar Knapp's "Brief Introduction to Alaska's Economy" presentation.

Fran Ulmer, chair of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission and former UAA chancellor, invited Gunnar Knapp, interim director of UAA's Institute of Social and Economic Research (ISER), to give federal government officials some background information on Alaska's economy at a roundtable discussion of the new National Strategy for the Arctic Region in June.

"The paradox of Alaska-a wealthy state with also some of the poorest areas in America combined-both of these parts of Alaska, the modern and the rural and poor, are very much affected by what happens in the Arctic and very much affected by U.S. Arctic policy," Knapp says.
