AFROTCUAA's Air Force ROTC Detachment 001 was named Best Small ROTC Detachment in the Northwest. Part of the Community and Technical College, AFROTC Detachment 001 boasts 45 cadets from UAA, Alaska Pacific University, Wayland Baptist University and Embry Riddle who will go on to compete for national recognition against three other regional award-winning programs.

AFROTC judges considered their production, education, recruiting and retention, university and public relations and cadet activities when determining which program to honor.

Detachment 001, established in 2000, has commissioned 115 Air Force officers. Professor of Aerospace Studies Glen Lehman, Lt. Col., U.S. Air Force, is commander of the detachment.
