Jim Lanier presents 'Beyond Ophir: Confessions of an Iditarod Musher, An Alaska Odyssey,' Oct. 8

by Michelle Saport  |

Tuesday, Oct. 8, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore

Jim Lanier moved to Alaska in 1967 to work at the Native Hospital with the U.S. Public Health Service and, after 33 years of service, recently retired as a pathologist at Providence Hospital.

Shortly after moving to the state, Jim caught the mushing bug from Iditarod racers Ron Gould, Dinah Knight and Jerry Riley, and ran his first Iditarod in 1979. Never having scratched, he has now entered and completed sixteen Iditarods, including at least one in all five calendar-decades the race has been in existence. His goal is to make it six decades. In a competitive fashion, he says, "After that, who knows?"

Don't miss the opportunity to meet this Alaska legend and his four-legged guest May. A book signing will accompany the event.
