2013 National Suicide Prevention Week

Each year in the U.S., 1,100 college students die by suicide. As part of National Suicide Prevention Week, the Student Health and Counseling Center and UAA Integrated Suicide Prevention Initiative (UAA-ISPI) invite you to visit a display of 1,100 flags in the Cuddy Quad to symbolize this loss-and remind everyone of the importance of suicide prevention awareness and actions. A booth with resources and information on campus prevention activities will be available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sept. 10in the Cuddy Quad and Sept. 12 in the Social Sciences Building, across from Kaladi Brothers.

UAA-ISPI is also hosting gatekeeper suicide prevention training to help students recognize suicide risk and feel confident intervening with someone who may be suicidal. The training focuses on the warning signs of suicide, how to effectively interact with someone who may be at risk for suicide and what campus and community resources are available. There are no prerequisites to take part in this training and everyone is welcome.

Upcoming suicide prevention trainings:

  • Thursday, Sept. 12, 1:30-3 p.m. in Allied Health Sciences Building, Room 207
  • Tuesday, Sept. 24, 3:30-5 p.m. in University Center, Room 146
