Tuition waiver interest survey--complete by Nov. 27, 2013

During the November Board of Regents tuition/budget meeting, Regent Ken Fisher motioned to cut the employee education benefit (i.e. "tuition waiver") by half in order to have a zero increase in tuition for our students in AY15. Due to the fact that employee benefits had not been publicly noticed, his motion was ruled out of order and therefore could not be voted on. His motion was then modified to only address the zero increase in tuition for students and did not address employee benefits. It failed with a five-to-five vote. Regent Fisher has requested that the employee education benefit be placed on the December BOR agenda for discussion.

The administration has gone on record supporting the education benefit and has recently made changes to it to demonstrate that it is prudently managed (6-month waiting period for new employees and maintaining a SAP for those students utilizing the waiver). To ensure the board is appropriately informed regarding their decision, it is asked that all employees complete the tuition waiver survey so factual information may be provided. This survey is designed to collect information from employees on how they perceive and value the tuition waiver benefit.

Please complete the tuition waiver survey at your earliest convenience, but no later than Wednesday, Nov. 27.

If you have any questions, please contact Erika Van Flein, director of benefits, at (907) 450-8226 or ervanflein@alaska.edu.
