Athletic Department will be closed Aug. 8

The UAA Athletic Department will be closed all day on Thursday, Aug. 8, for the annual Seawolf Golf Tournament. The Wells Fargo Sports Complex will remain open with normal hours.

James Madison Cup: Test your knowledge of the Constitution and win prizes, Sept. 17

The James Madison Cup Competition will test knowledge of the Constitution, including amendments. Questions will be separated into three levels of difficulty; the tougher the question, the more points you earn. Teams with the most points (and, presumably, knowledge) will win prizes. Register solo or as part of a two-person team.

2013 Japanese Summer Festival

Celebrate the rich culture of Japan and the strong bonds of friendship shared between Alaska and Japan at the Japanese Summer Festival Saturday, Aug. 10, outside Lucy Cuddy Hall. Chancellor Tom Case is scheduled to present the opening remarks. Raffle and grand prizes will be given away. Learn more about the Japanese culture and join in on the fun!

UAA student first to receive LEEP scholarship two years in a row

UAA student Lena Illig, majoring in criminal justice, is the first person to receive a $1,000 Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) college scholarship two years in a row. This year, she is one of 21 top students awarded the scholarship, which encourages their pursuit of law enforcement/public safety careers by the professional public safety officers of LEEP. Two M.F.A. grads take over the NYC literary scene

The Alaska Dispatch reported on three Alaska authors (Heather Lende, Tom Kizzia and Arlitia Jones) making waves in the literary world this week. Two of the authors–Heather Lende, M.F.A. '11, and Arlitia Jones, M.F.A. '95–are alumni of UAA's Master of Fine Arts in creative writing program.

Faculty Spotlight: Gabe Garcia

He came to the U.S. from the Philippines with his family in 1987, on the heels of the bloodless People Power Revolution that ousted Ferdinand Marcos. Although just 12 years old, he understood that people with passion can effect change. Gabe works for community-level change in the field of public health.
