2014 Black History Month celebration offers events throughout February

February is Black History Month! Join the UAA community in celebrating at one of the many events happening on campus this month.
Black History Month kick-off event: "Civil Rights in America" Thursday, Jan. 30, 12-2 p.m. Student Union, Cafeteria
Celebrate the kick-off of Black History Month at this event, featuring speaker Lt. Col. Leo Gray, who belonged to the group of World War II pilots who shattered myths about African Americans and became known as the acclaimed Tuskegee Airmen. Parking permit enforcement will be waived for this event, from 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., in the West, South, Wells Fargo Sports Complex Northwest, West Campus Central, Sports Complex West and North parking lots.
Viewing of "The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross" Monday, Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24, and March 3, 6-8 p.m. Rasmuson Hall, Room 106
Explore the history of African Americans with this six-part miniseries.

"The Trials of Muhammad Ali" Wednesday, Feb. 12, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Rasmuson Hall
In this documentary, Muhammad Ali battles to overturn a five-year prison sentence for refusing to perform U.S. military service in Vietnam.
"Our Stories" Panel Thursday, Feb. 13, 12-1:30 p.m. UAA/APU Consortium Library, Room 307
Please join us as we celebrate and recognize Black History Month and the people who continue to greatly influence our past, present and future. Speakers for the 2014 "Our Stories" panel include UAA's very own:

- Tonya Carney, administrative assistant, Athletics
- Taylor Mitchell, UAA student
Light refreshments will be provided. This event is free and open to the public. Please feel free to encourage others to attend and share in our time of recognition and celebration.
BSU Valentine's Dance Saturday, Feb. 15, 8 p.m.-1 a.m. Student Union, Cafeteria
Don't miss this annual Valentine's Day dance. Anyone planning to attend must have valid UAA identification.
Wil Haygood - "The Butler" Thursday, Feb. 20, 7:30 p.m. Wendy Williamson Auditorium
Guggenheim and National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow Wil Haygood will discuss his book, The Butler: A Witness to History. This is a free, public event.
