2014 Healthy Sexuality Week

UAA's Student Health and Counseling Center (SHCC) hosts Healthy Sexuality Week every year around Valentine's Day to promote sexual health among students and other members of the campus community. Defined by the World Health Organization as "a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality," good sexual health involves not only the absence of disease, but also a positive, thoughtful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships.

Events throughout the week challenge misconceptions about sexual health and encourage healthy decision-making. Below is the complete list of Healthy Sexuality Week events. But first, a few tips on maintaining healthy sexuality from UAA's Family Nurse Practitioner Betty Bang:

  1. Communicate: Active consent is necessary for any and all sexual activities. If someone is intoxicated by drugs or alcohol, he/she cannot give active consent. No means no.
  2. Practice safe sex: STIs are passed through the exchange of bodily fluids and skin-to-skin contact. Check out the resource fair on Feb. 11 or visit the SHCC to learn about protection options.
  3. Get tested: Many people have no symptoms with STIs. A comprehensive screening, like the one being offered Feb. 11, is the only way to know your status.
