The UAA Department of Theater & Dance is proud to announce its' upcoming production of Tennessee Williams' "The Night of the Iguana." This show is cast with an ensemble of 14 UAA students and Anchorage community members. Director Steven Hunt has worked on numerous productions of Williams' plays as a director, actor and designer. He is excited to bring to the stage one of Williams' most powerful, poetic and human works. Daniel Carlgren's scenic design, Colleen Metzger's costume design and Cedar Cussins' lighting design create an atmosphere for the play that is moving, evocative and complex.

Poignant moments of enormous compassion shine in the midst of a cheap Mexican resort hotel during an Equinoxial storm that rages both within and without the characters: the tough, sex-starved widow who runs the hotel; the neurotic, defrocked minister looking for refuge; and the gentle maiden lady from New England travelling with her ninety-seven year old grandfather poet. Thrown together in this squalid setting their human needs become explicit, and from their conflicts comes the realization that life must be endured and the spirit will somehow survive even beyond the limits of anguish.

Winner of four New York City Drama Critic Circle Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes, a Tony and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Tennessee Williams wrote this haunting and deeply moving play in 1961. According to the PBS "American Masters" documentary series, "He was brilliant and prolific, breathing life and passion into memorable characters." But his life was not without conflict. Like his characters, he was troubled and self-destructive, suffering from alcohol and drug addiction. Disparaged and praised by critics and audiences, Tennessee Williams will be remembered as one of America's greatest playwrights.
