Below is the complete schedule of upcoming events at the UAA Campus Bookstore this month. All bookstore events are informal, free and open to the public. There is free parking for these events in the South Lot, West Campus Central Lot (behind Rasmuson Hall), Sports Lot and Sports NW Lot. "Getting It Right 25 Years After the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill: Ways to Strengthen Pre-Planning and Response Measures" Monday, March 24,1-3 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore

A group of panelists will make the case that state and national oil spill response policies are outdated and fail to protect people and the environment. Learn what offshore oil, tar sands and fracking have in common, and what opportunities there are to protect Alaska's waters and people. The panelists are:

  • Riki Ott, Ph.D. (Earth Island Institute)
  • John French, Ph.D. (Pegasus Environmental Solutions)
  • Carl Wassilie (Alaska's Big Village Network)
  • Nikos Pastos (Center for Water Advocacy and Alaska Inter-Tribal Council)
  • Pam Miller (Alaska Community Action on Toxics); and
  • Rebecca Noblin (Center for Biological Diversity)

Richard Chacon presents "Contemporary Andean Ritual Violence: Male and Female Roles" Monday, March 24, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore

Richard Chacon is professor of anthropology at Winthrop University and has conducted anthropological investigations throughout Latin America. He documented the subsistence patterns, warfare and belief systems of the Yanomamö of Venezuela, the Yora of Peru and the Achuar (Shiwiar) of Ecuador. He investigated ritual violence among the Otavalo and Cotacachi Indians of Highland Ecuador. His books include The Ethics of Anthropology and Amerindian Research: Reporting on Environmental Degradation and Warfare; Taking and Displaying of Human Body Parts as Trophies by Amerindians; North American Indigenous Warfare and Ritual Violence; and Latin American Indigenous Warfare and Ritual Violence.

This is the second event in the "Women and Agents of Violence" series, held in honor of Women's History Month and co-sponsored by the UAA Campus Bookstore and UAA Department of Anthropology.

Robin Wang on "Yinyang: The Way of Heaven and Earth" Wednesday, March 26, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore

Robin Wang is a professor of philosophy and the director of Asian and Pacific Studies at Loyola Marymount University. She holds degrees in philosophy from Peking University, the University of Notre Dame and the University of Wales. She is also author of the widely acclaimed book, Yinyang: The Way of Heaven and Earth in Chinese Thought and Culture (New Approaches to Asian History). This event is co-sponsored by the UAA Campus Bookstore and UAA Department of Philosophy.

Tia M. Holley: "Speaking Out" Thursday, March 27, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore

Tia M. Holley, CDCII, NCACI, will discuss what Alaskans can do to stop violence against women. In the past, she presented her research on stages of addiction and untreated trauma for the Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault.

This is the third event in the "Women and Agents of Violence" series, held in honor of Women's History Month and co-sponsored by the UAA Campus Bookstore and UAA Department of Anthropology.

Ryan Harrod presents "Violence Against Women: Toward a New Understanding" Monday, March 31, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore

Ryan Harrod is an assistant professor in UAA's Department of Anthropology. His research involves identifying social inequality and violence within a community through the study of archaeological findings. In addition to bio-archaeology, Harrod's interests include biological anthropology, skeletal biology, paleopathology, trauma, violence, forensic anthropology and bio-cultural adaptation. His research projects have focused on the U.S. Southwest, Southcentral Alaska, the Great Basin and the Columbia Plateau.

This is the fourth and final event in the "Women and Agents of Violence" series, held in honor of Women's History Month and co-sponsored by the UAA Campus Bookstore and UAA Department of Anthropology.
