Kodiak High School team, The Elusive Jellyfish, won third place at the 2014 Tsunami Bowl.

The Kodiak team did exceptionally well this year in the 2014 National Ocean Sciences Tsunami Bowl. The team placed first for the oral presentation, third in the research paper category and sixth in the quiz bowl. "Overall, we came home with the bronze medal and $500 for the Tsunami Bowl account," Kodiak College Assistant Professor Switgard Duesterloh said.

Hannah Christian, a high school student who has obtained 17 college-level credits at KoC, was awarded one $5,000 Icicle Seafoods scholarship for her performance in the competition. The two faculty coaches, Jane Eisemann and Duesterloh, will also share a bonus prize-a half-day cruise with Kenai Fjords Tours for two to Fox Island, won in the coaches' raffle. After the arduous training schedule, the pair said they're looking forward to some summer R&R.

It was an all-around great trip and the students made an excellent team, Duesterloh said. She also noted that in addition to the competition, "Students were given a tour of the Seward SeaLife Center and Professor Russ Andrews gave them a private presentation of his marine mammal research, which was really special. Both of the team members that are not graduating this year were talking excitedly about coming back next year. What a weekend!"
