2014 Chancellor's Awards call for nominations

The nomination period for the 2014 Chancellor's Awards for Excellence is now open. Nominations will be accepted through 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11. To submit nominations, visit the Chancellor's Awards website. Each award will honor individuals and/or groups for their contributions to UAA and carry a $500 prize. This year, the possible "teaching" and "research & creative activity" awards increased by one each and there is a new Chancellor's Stewardship Awards category.

Award categories and criteria: Excellence in Teaching (up to three awards total-faculty and adjunct faculty)

  • Demonstrates exceptional commitment to advancing student achievement through excellence in teaching in two or more of the following aspects: 1) Instruction and Learning Experiences; 2) Building and Developing Curriculum and Learning Resources; 3) Mentoring Students; 4) Advancing Student Excellence; 5) Advancing Teaching Excellence.

Excellence in Academic Research/Creative Activity (up to two faculty awards)

  • Contributes outstanding and significant impact in a field of study and to UAA through research, engagement or creative activities that demonstrate the highest quality scholarship.

Promoting Student Achievement (two awards: one faculty, one staff)

  • Outstanding contribution to student achievement that improves transition to higher education, performance, grades and/or completion rates.
  • Demonstrated innovative and creative approaches in advising, programming, partnerships, outreach and support services that promote student achievement.

Staff Excellence (one award)

  • Exercises leadership, initiative, outstanding teamwork capabilities that create a positive atmosphere, and consistently performs at a level above normal job requirements to advance the mission of the university.

Diversity (one award: faculty or staff)

  • Outstanding contribution to the advancement of diversity of UAA students, staff and faculty through increasing the visibility and representation of diverse voices, creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness and community.

Community Engagement and Service (two awards: faculty and/or staff)

  • Outstanding contribution to advancing partnerships between the university and Alaska's schools, public and private industries and community organizations that promote the mission of the university and/or the university's role as a productive civic partner and an engaged university.
  • Demonstrated innovative and creative approaches to research and development partnerships that build and sustain Alaska's economic growth and promote reciprocity and shared decision-making.

Chancellor's Stewardship Awards [three awards: one individual, one small team (<10) and one large team (10+)] These awards reflect areas of significant interest and impact to the university and may be awarded to an individual faculty or staff member and/or groups collaborating as a team who have made an exceptional, innovative, and measurable impact in the following areas:

Safety - Making a significant contribution to improving the health and safety on campus.

  • Implementing a solution to an identified health and/or safety issue.
  • Taking action to prevent injuries/illness.
  • Outstanding response and cooperation to resolve unsafe conditions.

Operational Effectiveness - Making a meaningful contribution to increasing productivity, reducing costs, or improving efficiencies in work practices and processes at UAA.

  • Measurable contributions such as enhanced productivity, efficiencies in operations, cost savings, or revenue increases.
  • Demonstrated creative and innovative approaches that have a positive impact on service without adding to costs.

Sustainability - Demonstrating outstanding commitment to reducing UAA's impact on the environment.

  • Taking significant action to further UAA's sustainability goals in one or more of the following areas: 1) awareness and participation in sustainability efforts on campus and/or the community, 2) implementing new programs and/or initiatives, and/or 3) fostering community partnerships to further UAA's sustainability goals.
