Hurrah! The long wait is over. You can now check out a cruiser with your Wolfcard from the UAA/APU Consortium Library circulation desk.

With a swipe of a UAA ID card, students, staff and faculty will be able to borrow a bike just like they borrow a book. They can use the bike for an hour, a day or up to a month, for free. The bikes come with fenders, lights, a back rack and a front basket.

Users will sign a one-page contract agreeing to wear a helmet while they ride and accepting responsibility for damaged or stolen bikes. Only with a helmet in hand can they retrieve a key to their locked bike and locate it in the storage area. Bikes are recalled once a month for a safety check.

NOW, for this program to settle in and become sustainable and successful, it needs a student volunteer.

The Job

Here is the job description (delivered tongue in cheek):

What do they have in common?

Absolutely nothing, but keep reading, please.

UAA's student-driven bike-share program has gotten off the ground. The bikes are available for checkout from the Library circulation desk. Now UAA's student-driven bike-share program needs a student leader to resolve a few more issues:

  • where will the bikes be stored in winter?
  • should we get studded tires so the bikes can be used in winter? How?
  • when repairs are needed, how will it happen?

This task is for you:

  • If you are a problem solver
  • If you have about 5 hours a week to devote
  • If you are looking for a great addition to your resume and enthusiastic letters of recommendation

Two important points to consider:

  • Most of the work is already done
  • The Green Fee Board, the Office of Sustainability and the Transportation Working Group will support you.

So call 786-1515 or email pwilliams@uaa.alaska.edu. You'll be a hero. Bike-share needs you.
