National Public Health Week, April 7-11

During the first full week of April each year, National Public Health Week (NPHW) brings together communities across the United States to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues important to improving our nation. As part of NPHW, the UAA Department of Health Sciences will host several lectures and events on public health issues relevant to Alaska. Highlights include:

Lisa DH Aquino, M.H.S., and Emily Read present "Healthy Alaskans 2020: Healthy Alaskans in Healthy Communities" Tuesday, April 8, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Health Science Building, Room 113

Healthy Alaskans 2020 is a joint effort by the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Together, they have identified 25 leading health indicators, a list of critical health priorities for Alaska. The 25 leading health indicators include reducing the rates of cancer, suicide and interpersonal violence and sexual assault.

College of Health Diversity Committee Book Discussion: "The Kids From Nowhere" Wednesday, April 9, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Professional Studies Building, Room 211

In the early '80s, ten students from a Siberian-Yupik high school on St. Lawrence Island won one of America's most competitive academic competitions, despite remarkable odds. "The Kids From Nowhere" is their story.

Bulent Kilic presents "Social Determinants of Health: Examples from Turkey" Wednesday April 9, 1-2 p.m. Eugene Short Hall, Room 104

Bulent Kilic is an associate professor in the Department of Public Health at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey. A frequent participant in international conferences, he has spoken extensively about the health of women and children, as well as the privatization of healthcare in Turkey.
