Students vote on smoke-free campus April 8 and 9

UAA is working toward becoming a smoke-free campus and students will vote on the issue April 8and 9, either on campus and or online at uaa.alaska.edu/life.

According to a survey by UAA faculty members Drs. Gabe Garcia and Joy Mapaye, almost 80 percent of UAA students do not smoke and about 75 percent of UAA students support a smoke-free campus.

The upcoming vote will play a large part in making UAA the first Alaska campus to become smoke-free. If the vote is in favor of a nonsmoking campus, it will give the Chancellor and the entire UAA staff a chance to implement the students' decision.

Voting will take place in the Student Union, April 8 and 9, during the afternoon. Online voting at uaa.alaska.edu/life will be available beginning at 12:01 a.m. on April 8 and ending at midnight on April 9. All are invited to join in voting at the Student Union.

In addition to the smoke-free initiative, students will also vote on the removal of the sustainability committee and the establishment of an outdoor recreational program fee. Students will also cast their vote for president, vice president, senators, concert board members and media board members.
