Spring 2014: Juried Student Show at SU Gallery

Exhibition: Juried Student Art Show Location: UAA Student Union Gallery Show Dates: April 16-May 2 Gallery Hours: Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Opening reception: Wednesday, April 16, 5-7 p.m. Juror's lecture: Tuesday, April 15, 7:30-8:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts Building, Room 150 Midday reception: Thursday, April 17, 1:30-3 p.m.

The Student Union Gallery presents the Juried Student Art Show. This exhibition runs Wednesday, April 16, through Friday, May 2, and will consist of work from outstanding UAA art students, selected by Alaska-based juror David Woodie. Awards will be given for the demonstration of superior skill, creativity and technique. Woodie will deliver the juror's lecture Tuesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts Building, Room 150.

Juror David Woodie on his history: "I was born and raised in Eugene, Ore. I took an early interest in art and attended classes at the University of Oregon in the mid-1960s. Like many others of my generation, I was caught up in the upheavals of that time. In my late teens, I abandoned art and after drifting around the country for two years or so I returned to Oregon and took a job working in the woods. I continued this line of work for the next 17 years, first in the Pacific Northwest and later in Alaska.

In the late-1980s, I moved from Prince of Wales Island to Juneau, began commercial fishing in the summers and returned to doing art in the winters. Jane Terzis taught life drawing at UAS at the time and was a great friend and mentor to me. In 1996, I began exhibiting and since then have been working full-time at painting and have shown work throughout Alaska. I have been teaching life drawing and associated art classes at UAS since 2003."
