The University of Alaska Anchorage will celebrate the 2,420 graduates of the Class of 2014 at the annual commencement ceremony Sunday, May 4, at 3 p.m. at the Sullivan Arena.

A special Graduate Degree Hooding Ceremony will honor graduate students receiving their hoods on Saturday, May 3, at 10 a.m. in the Wendy Williamson Auditorium on UAA's campus.

Commencement is UAA's capstone event celebrating the achievements of its students and the lifetime achievements of extraordinary faculty and community members. UAA will confer degrees on students from the following colleges: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Public Policy, College of Health, College of Education, College of Engineering, and the Community and Technical College. In all, UAA will confer 85 certificates, 652 associate degrees, 1,364 baccalaureate degrees, 13 post-baccalaureates, 88 graduate certificates, 312 master's degrees and three doctoral degrees. The 2,420 graduates* of the Class of 2014 will earn a total of 2,517 degrees or certificates.

This year's student speaker is Michael Ulroan, an Alaska Native from Chevak, who will earn his civil engineering degree after eight years of hard work. He will be the first engineer in the history of his village, and credits his parents and the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) with inspiring him to stay the course in what turned out to be a tough race. Michael, a future structural design engineer, is enthusiastic about his goals to pursue an engineering master's degree and work with ANSEP in its campaign: "Building a National Model for Excellence in Higher Education Programs."

Three prominent leaders will be recognized with honorary degrees for their many achievements and contributions in service to Alaska, to learning and to humankind: Alex Hills, Honorary Doctor of Letters; William and Karen Workman, Honorary Doctor of Letters.

Many years of outstanding service to the university and its students will be gratefully recognized with the conferring of emeritus status on six members of UAA's faculty and staff: Ping Tung "P.T." Chang, Phyllis Fast, Lee Huskey, Stephen Langdon, Kim Peterson, Bart Quimby and Stan Vanover (staff emeritus).
