Fall 2014: Provide your feedback about a smoke-free UAA

by Michelle Saport  |

UAA would like to assess employee attitudes on a smoke-free campus. Please help by completing this survey before Sept. 29. Read the below memo from governance leaders for more details.

"This is a joint letter from governance leaders for staff and faculty (Classified Council, APT Council and Faculty Senate). Our purpose is to survey your views on the proposed smoke-free campus policy UAA students voted for last spring. Because the Chancellor's approval of this policy would affect employees as well as students, Tom Case has asked campus governance leaders to create an online survey to assess employee attitudes on a smoke-free campus. Your participation in this survey is important and there are incentives for your input.

The faculty and staff survey  opens today (Aug. 18) and will remain open through Sept. 29. We will send out a reminder email for the survey on Sept. 4 and Sept. 18.

For background on the issue, we refer you to this informational website that includes the following background material:

  • Current smoking policy on campus
  • Full text of the student referendum that won in the USUAA election
  • Frequently Asked Questions on what the policy change would mean at UAA

In addition, student leaders of the smoke-free movement have committed to attending the joint APT-CC retreat on Sept. 4 to discuss their proposed policy change and answer questions from campus governance representatives.

Please take the time to inform yourself on the proposed policy change by going to the above website. If the policy is adopted, its implementation includes a year-long transition period during which employees and students will be informed of the implications of the policy and have an opportunity to be engaged in how enforcement would be managed.

Thank you for your time and careful consideration of this important campus policy initiative by students."
