Art faculty member B. Hugh McPeck passes away

Dear UAA community:

Hugh McPeck, a longtime Associate Professor of Sculpture and Drawing, passed away on September 18 in Anchorage. Professor McPeck began teaching at UAA in 1996. He was loved and respected by his students, for whom he provided career-long mentorship and support. He exhibited his drawings, paintings and sculptures throughout Alaska, the United States and Europe. His work conveyed his appreciation for the Alaskan landscape, wildlife, the human figure and his love for horses He created many pieces for venues throughout the Municipality of Anchorage as a part of the "One Percent for Art" program. A gifted horse trainer, Professor McPeck spent more than 30 years giving clinics and individual lessons in the art of riding. He is survived by his wife, Ann Gabler, and two grown sons, Sean McPeck and Seth Whitfield.

The Department of Art will host a Celebration of Life on Monday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. in the UAA Arts Building, Room 150. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join Professor McPeck's friends and family for this celebration.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Hugh's memory to Bird Treatment and Learning Center, Alaskan Equine Rescue or the HOOA K-9 Monument Fund. These organizations had special meaning to Hugh.
