Sept. 22–25, 2014: Chinese Culture Week

The UAA Confucius Institute (UAA-CI) is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the global Confucius Institute program with a week of events. UAA-CI's goal is to share Chinese culture in a fun and vibrant way. All Chinese Culture Week events are free and open to the public. Chinese Culture Booths Monday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Cuddy Hall

Kick off Chinese Culture Week by visiting booths with information and hands-on activities relating to Chinese painting, calligraphy, paper cutting and taiji quan. Learn how to relax with taiji and get a crash course in Chinese art. Chef Elsie Wu from China Lights Oriental Cuisine will perform a cooking demo of Asian shredded chicken breast and noodle salad from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Cuddy. Free samples will be available.

Confucius Institute Day Celebration Tuesday, Sept. 23, 6:45 p.m. (start) Fine Arts Building, Room 150

Celebrate 10 years of the Confucius Institute around the world! Join the UAA Confucius Institute (UAA-CI) for an evening featuring traditional Chinese dancing, kung fu demonstrations, live music and more.

Learning Chinese Through Song Wednesday, Sept. 24, 7-9 p.m. Rasmuson Hall, Room 101

Do you want to learn Chinese through song? Do you want to teach Chinese through song? Whether you are a teacher or a student, you will find Hong Zhang's workshop inspiring. She will guide you through everything you need to know to teach and learn Chinese through songs and singing.

Hong Zhang holds a Master of Music in voice performance from Binghamton University, SUNY, and a Bachelor of Music in voice performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is currently an instructor of Chinese and an associate faculty member of music at Binghamton University. Zhang gives lectures and recitals around the world on Chinese ethnic groups and their songs, as well as workshops on teaching Chinese through song. Her curriculum includes the groundbreaking course "Singing Chinese" and her students have won awards at many international competitions. In addition, Zhang is also the co-author of Chinese Through Song (SUNY Press, 2010) and Cultural Chinese: Readings in Art, Literature, and History (Georgetown University Press, 2012).

Chinese Dinner and Films Thursday, Sept. 25, 6 p.m. Wendy Williamson Auditorium

The UAA Confucius Institute, along with University Housing, Dining and Conference Services, will host a dinner and screen three short Chinese Films. Dinner is free (drinks and dessert are not) and will be served starting at 6 p.m. The movies will begin around 7 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Special note: Food will not be allowed inside the auditorium. Please refrain from bringing any food with you to watch the movies. Food will be served in the lobby only.
