See the list of events below to find out what's happening at the UAA Campus Bookstore this October. All UAA Campus Bookstore events are informal, free and open to the public. There is free parking for bookstore events in the West Campus Central Lot (behind Rasmuson Hall), the Sports Lot and the Sports NW Lot.

'Alaska Quarterly Review' Showcase Monday, Oct. 6, 1-3 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
A complete compilation of Alaska Quarterly Review, from the first double issue (Fall 1982) to the just-released 62nd double issue, will be on display for you to peruse and enjoy.
Jervette Ward presents 'Sex, Race and Class: Portrayals of Black Women in Reality TV' Monday, Oct. 6, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
Jervette Ward is assistant professor in the UAA Department of English. She earned a Ph.D. in English with a focus on literary and cultural studies from the University of Memphis. Her forthcoming book Scandalous Stars: Black Women in Reality TV will be published in 2015. This event is sponsored by the UAA Campus Bookstore, Department of English, Multicultural Center and College of Arts and Sciences.
There will be a pre-event reception for Jervette Ward's lecture from 4-4:45 p.m. in the Multicultural Center (Rasmuson Hall, Room 106). All are welcome to attend.
Poet Joan Kane: 'Writing Opportunities for Alaska Native Students' Tuesday, Oct. 7, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
Joan Kane is the featured artist in the most recent Alaska Quarterly Review (Volume 31, Fall 2014). At this event, she will read selected poems, discuss Alaska Quarterly Review and mention writing opportunities for Alaska Native students. This event is co-presented by Alaska Quarterly Review and the UAA Campus Bookstore.
'The Art of Writing and Publishing in Different Genres' with Steve Levi, Deb Vanasse and Martha AmoreMonday, Oct. 13, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
Steve Levi (Walrus with a Gold Tooth, and Cowboys of the Sky), Martha Amore (Weathered In, "Geology") and Deb Vanasse (Cold Spell and Lucy's Dance) describe their multifaceted books, writing styles and publishing today.
'Tutka Bay Lodge Cookbook' and cooking demonstration with Kirsten Dixon and Mandy Dixon Tuesday, Oct. 14, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
The blurb for Tutka Bay Lodge Cookbook, set to publish Oct. 1, reads: "In personal stories, evocative photographs and recipes that are purposefully simple and designed for the home cook, Chef Kirsten Dixon and her family share fresh, rustic cuisine offering friendship, communicating passion and bringing comfort and delight to the table."

UAA Distance Education Faculty Irasema Ortega and Karen Roth discuss Alaska Native education and science instruction Thursday, Oct. 16, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
UAA faculty members Irasema Ortega and Karen Roth teach distance education courses in the College of Education. Their work focuses on cultural and sustainable instruction, STEAM curriculum, the Chevak Teacher Education Initiative and the Early Childhood Programs (ECD). This event is a unique opportunity for students to meet their professors and other students with similar interests. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Paul White presents 'Mining and the Environment: Archaeological Perspectives on an Unwanted Legacy' Monday, Oct. 20, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
Paul White is an assistant professor in the UAA Department of Anthropology, with research interests in the legacies of American mining. He has examined historical archaeological sites in Alaska, California, Michigan and Vermont, investigating histories of environmental and technological transformation and connections with Native American land dispossession. Currently, he is writing a book on the archaeology of North American mining.

UAA Faculty Davin Holen, Ryan Fortson and Lia Slemons discuss teaching, their courses and work focusing on Alaska. Topics include Pebble Mine (ANTH 101), Tribal Courts and Alaska Native Rights (JUST 485/LEGL 485) and Climate Change Adaptation (ENVI 211). This event is a unique opportunity for students to meet their professors and other students with similar interests. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Alaska Memoirs: Dave Atcheson presents 'Dead Reckoning' and Jeff Schultz presents 'Chasing Dogs' Wednesday, Oct. 22, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
At this event, two extraordinary Alaskans present their newest books.
Dave Atcheson will discuss his memoir Dead Reckoning, Navigating a Life on the Last Frontier, Courting Tragedy on its High Seas. Dave Atcheson teaches at Kenai Peninsula College. He is also the author of Hidden Alaska: Bristol Bay and Beyond and the guidebook Fishing Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. About Dead Reckoning: "It's a story in which college students and 'fish hippies' work in canneries alongside survivalists, rednecks, religious freaks and deckhands with damning secrets in dangerous waters, driven by the need to feed an insatiable appetite for adventure."Photographer Jeff Schultz will discuss Chasing Dogs - My Adventures as the Official Photographer of Alaska's Iditarod. Schultz is also the author of Dogs of the Iditarod. About Chasing Dogs: "Since 1982, Schultz has served as Iditarod's official photographer, traveling by plane, snow machine, snowshoes and on foot to capture the race as no one else has... Over the course of his thirty-plus-year career, Schultz has become as iconic as the race itself, having experienced the same harsh trail conditions and weather hazards as the race participants while artfully chronicling their journeys."
Alaska State Climatologist Peter Olsson and ASET Scientist Birgit Hagedorn discuss their research and goals Thursday, Oct. 23, 5-7 p.m. UAA Campus Bookstore
Peter Olsson, Ph.D., is the state climatologist with the Alaska State Climate Center (ASCC). Birgit Hagedorn, Ph.D., is the manager of the Applied Science and Engineering Technology Labs (ASET). Topics at this event include new research and technology, understanding climate data and an overview of their current projects.
