Saturday, October 18, 3-5 p.m. Student Union, Cafeteria

October is Filipino American History Month. It commemorates the anniversary of the arrival of the first Filipinos in America on Oct. 18, 1587. Filipino Americans are one of the largest and fastest growing minority groups in our nation and state. More than 12,000 Filipinos reside in Anchorage and more than 19,000 reside in the entire state of Alaska. A significant portion of the UAA community are Filipino Americans and at least three are tenured faculty.

In celebration of Filipino American History Month, we invite you to the "Filipino American Film and Fiesta" event. This event is free and open to the public-so bring your family and friends and invite your students. There will be food, performances, prizes and a screening of the documentary "The Learning" by Filipina-American filmmaker Ramona Diaz. "The Learning" is a film about four Filipina teachers from the Philippines recruited to teach in inner city Baltimore. To watch the trailer for the documentary, visit pbs.org/pov/learning.

This event is sponsored by UAA's Diversity Action Council, Office of Campus Diversity and Compliance, Women's Studies, Journalism and Communication and Center for Community Engagement and Learning.
